What happens when you combine a tractor, a skid steer, a pickup and a side-by-side? You get the Bobcat UW56 Toolcat, and it might just be the most practical piece of equipment you’ve never considered.
Bobcat calls it a farm all-rounder: a machine designed to replace multiple pieces of equipment. It’s a bold claim, but after spending time behind the wheel, there’s more substance to it than marketing speak.
The Toolcat has been part of Bobcat’s range for years, but this latest iteration arrives with meaningful updates — LED work lights, a more responsive drive system, an optional reverse camera and a refreshed display.
The concept, however, remains the same: one machine capable of hauling, lifting, towing, mowing and handling the full spectrum of everyday property work.

Power comes from a 61hp Tier 4 diesel engine purpose-built for utility applications.
In practice, it delivers. Whether you’re pushing a bucket through a hay pile, dragging a trailer across soft ground or running a mower deck on a rough slope, the engine pulls without fuss.
Tier 4 compliance means cleaner emissions, which matters increasingly for operators working in confined spaces or around livestock.
A 76-litre fuel tank and 150-hour engine oil change interval keep downtime to a minimum.
The business end is up front. With more than 45 compatible attachments — from buckets and forks to mowers and brooms — the UW56 is built to take on just about any task a mixed property can throw at it.

Bobcat’s Bob-Tach mounting system allows quick attachment changes, and the optional Power Bob-Tach system takes that further, letting operators switch attachments without leaving the cab. For anyone moving between jobs throughout the day, that’s a genuine time-saver.
Lift capacity is rated at 680kg at the arms — enough for hay bales, soil, feed and general materials. Standard LED work lights extend the working day into low-light conditions, a practical addition for operators with longer task lists than daylight hours.
The cabin of the UW56 sits somewhere between a UTV and a skid steer — you get the steering wheel with spinner knob and two-person seating of a utility vehicle, paired with a centre joystick for control of the front loader. It’s an intuitive layout once you’re in it.
It’s a fully enclosed cab, which matters when dust, rain or heat is part of the working day. Heating and air conditioning come standard — a genuine necessity in Australia’s climate, not a luxury.

Controls are straightforward and ergonomic. The 5-inch digital display gives a clear view of key machine parameters — fuel levels, engine RPM and, if the optional reverse camera is fitted, a live video feed. The UW56 isn’t overloaded with technology, but it gives operators everything they need without a steep learning curve.
Creature comforts including USB charging ports, storage trays and a radio round out the interior. It’s not a luxury cab, but it’s a space you can spend a full day in without complaint.
At the rear, this is where the Toolcat becomes more than just a loader.
The cargo box carries 907kg — a serious haul of firewood, feed, gravel or fencing gear. Better yet, the tray can be hydraulically lifted from inside the cab, making unloading simple and efficient without leaving the seat.

Towing capacity sits at 1.8 tonnes via a standard 2-inch receiver hitch, plenty for a trailer, sprayer or a set of tools for the day.
A total rated capacity of 1905kg means the Toolcat can comfortably carry two people and still haul or tow meaningful weight, which only adds to its case as a genuine do-everything machine.
Top speed is 28km/h, so this isn’t a machine designed to cover ground quickly. Around a property, though, that’s more than adequate, and keyless start gives it a modern feel from the moment you sit down.
Steering is light and responsive. All-wheel steer and a tight 3.4-metre turning radius give the UW56 a real advantage in confined spaces. That turning circle alone makes it worth considering for anyone working around sheds, gates or narrow rows.

The shuttle shift makes changing direction simple: forward, reverse, done. High and low range keep the operating logic clean with no overthinking required, which is exactly what you want when you’re switching between tasks throughout the day.
Front attachments are controlled via a joystick, similar to a traditional skid steer loader and intuitive for anyone with that experience. Cruise control takes the edge off longer tasks, and the updated driver response system delivers smoother acceleration and deceleration than earlier Toolcat models.

Ride comfort is decent even over uneven ground, thanks to four-wheel independent suspension. With the frame isolated from the wheels, the attachment and loader stays steady throughout the drive — reducing spillage and keeping a mower in steady contact with the ground rather than bouncing around.
Some machines do one thing well. The Bobcat UW56 Toolcat does several things well and that’s the point.
For anyone moving constantly between lifting, hauling and towing throughout the day, the Toolcat represents a practical compromise between multiple machines. Whether it genuinely replaces two, three or four pieces of equipment will depend on the operation, but the case is compelling. And if it does, the economics make serious sense.
In a segment where versatility is the pitch and delivery sometimes falls short, the UW56 mostly delivers on its promise. It’s not the fastest, not the most powerful and not the cheapest way to any single job but as an all-property workhorse, it may just take the cake.
