Leading off-road vehicle manufacturer BRP Can-Am is joining forces with Safework NSW to conduct a series of training sessions for farmers in rural NSW to improve quad bike and side-by-side safety on farms.
Farmers and farm workers are able to claim up to $310 per person for the training sessions, as part of the NSW quad bike safety rebate program.
Local Can-Am dealers will be sponsoring a total of six sessions to be held across regional NSW, starting from the first week of April. A SafeWork representative will be in attendance to qualify attendees for the quad bike and small business assistance rebates.
By the end of the sessions, Can-Am expects to have trained over 100 farmers on the safe use of quad bikes and utility vehicles.
According to SafeWork Regional Operations and Sector Initiatives Group Director, Tony Williams, Can-Am is the "first of the big brands" to implement such safety programs.
"We congratulate them and look forward to other brands delivering similar programs," he says.
BRP Asia & Pacific Director and General Manager, Gregoire Dupont, says the program has been designed to ensure quad bike users treat their vehicles with respect and take all safety measures before riding.
"Many operators become complacent or are first time users of these vehicles and whilst we provide comprehensive information, safety briefing on delivery of the unit and DVDs about safe use, there is always room for specific hands-on training," he says.
"It is important to note that even long term users of these machines will get new skills and knowledge from these courses that will help them stay safe."
In addition to the series of training in April for farmers, Can-Am and SafeWork NSW are also planning to bring their coaching program to schools in North East New South Wales in mid-May for about a week.
