CLAAS cracks into wheel loader market

New TORION range of agricultural loaders offers a machine for every task on the farm

CLAAS has announced its foray into the wheel loader market by releasing the seven-model TORION range that was produced in collaboration with German materials handling specialist, Liebherr.

The loader range made its official debut at the Agritechnica trade show in Hanover, Germany in November, where CLAAS was awarded five product innovation medals.

Entry level

CLAAS Harvest Centre’s Shane Barratt says the entry-level TORION 535 and 639 models are ideal for use in livestock operations.

“These agile all-round machines have maximum tipping loads of 3.45 and 3.85 tonnes and can be easily operated by any driver,” he says.

“With a clearance height of less than 2.5m, they are ideal for working in and around buildings.”

The two models feature 68hp Yanmar Stage IIIB engines and an infinitely variable hydrostatic drive with two drive modes – 0 to 6km/h and 0 to 20 km/h.

“The driver can switch from one mode to the other at the touch of a button, depending on the application,” Barratt says.

“For work at low speeds, such as mixing feed, the amount of hydraulic oil can be controlled via the creep speed control.

“Their low centre of gravity ensures optimal stability, even when working on uneven terrain. The central articulation/swivel joint also dampens bumps, providing additional safety and comfort.”

The engine has been mounted low and towards the rear which creates a counterweight to the lifting zone, reducing the need for ballast, tyre wear and fuel consumption.

Mid-range

The mid-range TORION 1410, 1511 and 1177 models, with maximum tipping loads of 7.75 to 9.75 tonnes, are ideal for farms and contractors requiring more power for silo compaction or for handling grain, fertiliser and other bulk material, according to CLAAS.

They are powered by the same DPS Stage IV engines found in CLAAS’ ARION 500 series tractors.

“These engines deliver 140 to 167hp and feature the CLAAS DYNAMIC COOLING system which automatically matches fan speed to engine demand,” Barratt says.

“An integrated reversing fan system, which automatically removes dirt from the radiator grille, is also available as an option.”

The hydrostatic VARIPOWER transmission provides three drive modes (0 to 6km/h, 0 to 16km/h and 0 to 40 km/h).

The three mid-range models can be equipped with either P- or Z-kinematic systems.

“P-kinematics spreads the load across the entire lift zone and has higher holding forces in the upper working area, making it suitable for most agricultural work,” Barratt explains.

“By comparison, Z-kinematics has a very high breakaway torque, allowing the bucket to be tipped quickly.”

Mid-range TORION models are equipped with a standard 7-inch touchscreen.

Operators can control all boom functions via a simple joystick. Alternatively, an optional multi-function lever has a four-way lever that can be used to control up to four hydraulic circuits, such as when operating a high dump bucket or silage grabs.

Range-topping

The flagship 1812 and 1914 models, which have maximum tipping loads of 11.1 and 12.4 tonnes, cater to the needs of agricultural contractors and larger farming businesses.

They are powered by Liebherr Stage IV engines that deliver 195 and 228hp respectively, coupled with a continuously variable CMATIC transmission.

The boom is available with either agricultural or Z-kinematics.

Roomy cab

CLAAS has equipped all TORION models with generously sized cabs offering all-round visibility and user-friendly features.

“The generous front windscreen extends laterally from the cab floor to the roof, providing an uninterrupted view,” Barratt says.

“The tapered boom narrows toward the cab, ensuring optimal visibility of the load and the attachment at all times. The rounded rear window provides the operator with an optimum view to the rear when on the move.”

Mid and high range models can be equipped with the SMART LOADING driver-assistance system that optimises machine operation for increased efficiency. This system automatically returns the bucket and boom to pre-set positions and lifting and lowering limits using the joystick.

A touchscreen-based weighing system is available as an option in all models.

Other options include a high-lift boom that can achieve a maximum loading height of 4.64m at the pivot pin.

No date has been confirmed for the release of the CLAAS TORION wheel loaders in Australia.
