CLAAS launches new AXION 800 flagship

CLAAS's latest AXION 870 tractor with a power rating of 295hp rounds out its award-winning AXION 800 line-up

German ag-machinery manufacturer CLAAS has released the most powerful tractor yet for its AXION 800 range – the AXION 870 replacing the brand's 'Tractor of the Year 2014', the AXION 850, as the series' flagship model.

The range now offers a total of seven models with power ranging from 205 to 295hp.

With a maximum rating of 295hp and CMATIC continuously variable transmission as standard, the AXION 870 bridges the gap between the AXION 850 (264hp) and AXION 910 (320hp).

Although offering 31hp more than the 850, the AXION 870 has the same operational weight.

"AXION 870 is equipped with the same proven 6.7-litre, six-cylinder, FPT Tier 4 engine found in the AXION 800 series," says CLAAS Group Tractor Product Manager, Dave Knowles.

"However, the addition of CLAAS POWER MANAGEMENT powerboost system lifts the maximum power delivered from 280hp to 295hp."

The electronic engine control system automatically delivers an extra 15hp whenever power-take-off is required or when the tractor's operating speed is more than 14km/h.

"This extra power makes the AXION 870 a highly versatile work platform," says Knowles.

"It is particularly suitable for heavy-duty power-take-off work, such as mowing or baling; or fast-moving field work, such as light cultivation or spraying."

A number of ballasting options are available for the tractor should maximum traction be required in heavy tillage applications. According to Knowles, the ballasts can take the tractor's tare weight from just over nine tonnes to a maximum permissible weight of 15 tonnes.

"The front weight block can be removed in just a few minutes to improve fuel efficiency when this extra ballast is not required," he says.

"All told, AXION 870 is going to present a very attractive alternative to the larger AXION 920, especially for those operating large farms or operating between multiple properties."

The new model is equipped with the same suspended front axle featured across the series which increases the permissible gross vehicle weight by up to one tonne. Alternatively, the 870 can be specified with an optional PROACTIV front axle suspension.

In the cab, the AXION 870 features CLAAS's signature CEBIS operating system, which features a multi-function control lever and control terminal integrated into the right armrest.

"All important functions of both the tractor and implements can be conveniently controlled using function keys in the armrest or with the CMOTION multifunction lever," Knowles says.

CEBIS also features the CLAAS Sequence Management system, which enables easy headland management.

In addition, the AXION 870 can be equipped ex-factory with CLAAS's GPS PILOT steering system in combination with either the S10 or S7 terminal.

The CLAAS AXION 870 is available now and is priced from $275,000.
