COVID-19: Agriculture “will not be affected by shutdowns”

Food production and supply chain deemed essential and will keep going regardless of shut down measures

Amid the confusion surrounding shutdown measures across the country in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19, Federal Agriculture Minister, David Littleproud, has assured that farmers will be allowed to keep farming and food will continue to be delivered around the country.

“The Commonwealth is guaranteeing food production and supply as we deal with the virus’s spread,” Littleproud said.

“As far as the Commonwealth is concerned, food production and supply is an essential service. Feeding our nation is an essential service.”

This means the border closures imposed by states including Tasmania, NT, QLD, SA and WA will not affect agricultural supply chains.

“Trucks carrying food and produce will get through the shops," said Minister Littleproud.

“Feed, hay, fertiliser and other agricultural products will continue being delivered to farms.”

Recently, the National Farmers Federation (NFF) launched a communications campaign to reassure Australians that our farmers produce enough food to feed 75 million people.

"That’s three times our own population. In fact, two-thirds of what our farmers produce each year is exported for the world to enjoy,” said NFF president, Fiona Simson.

"Unlike other countries, Australians' access to home-grown, quality, safe food is extremely secure.

"Between 80 to 96 per cent of the food on Australian supermarket shelves is grown in Australia."

"No need to panic buy"

That is the message Minister Littleproud, the NFF, as well as the Federal and State Governments are stressing to the public.

“Australians can be assured that their farmers will be able to keep producing the great food they’re renowned for the world over,” Minister Littleproud said.

“This food will arrive fresh and on time at their local supermarket the same as it’s always done but they don’t need added pressure of senseless hoarding,” he said.

“Australians should stay calm and know Australian agriculture will be there for them.”
