The story of the 700 Vario began in 1998, when Fendt introduced the original Favorit 700 series, revolutionising tractor design by pairing a four-valve engine with its continuously variable transmission.

It won the prestigious European Tractor of the Year title in 1999, proving that stepless drive wasn’t just a gimmick, but a genuine innovation that kept engines operating in their optimal power band.

Over the past 25 years and seven model generations, the 700 Vario has matured into Fendt’s best-selling tractor range worldwide. In Australia, older Gen 5 and Gen 6 models remain sought after on the used market, while the new Gen 7 series represents the future for the nameplate.

The new Gen 7 series features a major mechanical departure from previous iterations, with Fendt replacing the former power plant with an all-new, purpose-built 7.5-litre six-cylinder AGCO Power CORE75 engine, paired with the low-speed Fendt iD concept.

By engineering the engine to deliver its peak torque – up to 1,450Nm on the flagship 728 Vario – at just 1,300rpm, the tractor handles heavy drawbar work at low revs, significantly cutting diesel burn across long shifts.

This engine is mated to the new single-stage TA 190 VarioDrive drivetrain, which independently powers the front and rear axles with dynamic torque distribution.

The latest VarioDrive eliminates the need for manual four-wheel-drive engagement and actively pulls the front axle into turns, allowing for a tight 10-metre turning circle. This means you get a 300-horsepower machine that’ll pivot in tight spots, whether that’s in the paddock or the shed.

The current Australian Gen 7 line-up comprises five models – the 720, 722, 724, 726 and 728 Vario – with a power range from 203 to 283 horsepower. The top-spec 728 can produce up to 303 horsepower thanks to the Fendt DynamicPerformance boost.

Unlike conventional power boosts tied to PTO work or travel speed, this extra 20 horsepower is delivered dynamically whenever auxiliary functions require it, even during stationary applications.

For Australian broadacre and row-crop operators, versatility is further enhanced by factory options for a 60-inch (1,524mm) track width, allowing the 700 Vario to fit into controlled-traffic farming systems.

Then there’s the optional integrated VarioGrip tyre pressure regulation system, allowing operators to deflate the large 2.05-metre rear tyres from the cab to widen the footprint in soft paddocks for extra traction, then inflate them on the fly before hitting the bitumen at speeds of up to 60km/h.

The VisioPlus cabin in the latest 700 Vario models reveals why Fendt remains a benchmark for operator comfort during those 16-hour harvest shifts – or longer, for so many Australian farmers.

It features a 77-degree vertical field of view and Fendt Stability Control that actively reduces side lean above 25km/h, meaning the cab is designed for maximum safety both on the road and in the field.

Central to the operator experience is the FendtONE operating environment, which merges onboard tractor controls with offboard office management. Up to three digital displays – including a 10-inch digital dash, a 12-inch armrest terminal and an optional 12-inch roof-drop monitor – allow operators to customise joystick button functions and manage ISOBUS implements with a flick of a thumb.

Whether equipped with a front loader or hitched to an implement, the 700 Vario balances digital intelligence with raw mechanical muscle, while remaining user-friendly to operate.
