How to: Keep your compact tracked loader running

Serviceability should always be top of mind when picking a compact tracked loader

Often when people are looking to purchase a new machine, several key factors will spring to mind, such as performance, operating weight, hydraulic power and not to mention - price.

However, one simple thing often gets overlooked: serviceability. What use would a machine be if it gives you plenty of power but breaks down every so often because it is not serviced correctly, or because the operator finds the unit too complicated to maintain?

Construction windows are often short enough nowadays due to increasing regulatory restrictions, therefore operators simply cannot afford any downtime.

We spoke to heavy machinery dealership, Hastings Deering, for some top tips on what to look for when purchasing a compact tracked loader, as well as ways to increase machine uptime on the job site.

1.      Look for machine diagnostics and monitoring tech

Most advanced compact track loaders nowadays come with plenty of smart technology to help with routine servicing and maintenance of machines. They accurately detect crucial elements to keep your machine running smoothly such as engine temperature and fuel levels, and alert the operator should something go wrong.

Look for systems that serve these information to you in an easily understandable manner, on a clear display in the cab, so you are able to identify the issue immediately and get to the root of the problem instead of panicking over what the beeping sound meant.

2.      Consider positioning of servicing points

Let’s face it, nobody wants to spend hours going through their daily maintenance checklist before firing up their machines to start their day. Any time spent not working is unwanted downtime. Therefore, the easier it is to access the check points, the better.

Ensure all maintenance points such as engine air filter, battery, engine oil dipstick, engine oil filter, electric priming fuel filter, water separator, hydraulic oil level sight gauge and hydraulic oil filter are easily accessed, without the use of tools.

Also, make sure grease points are grouped close together so they are quicker and easier to service.

Look for a machine with a well-organised component layout so it is easier to identify a problematic component and fix the problem when it arises.

3.      Consider the maintenance intervals

Where possible, go for a machine with servicing intervals that are easier to remember, such as multiples of 100 or 250 hours.

What may also help is to look for manufacturers who provide maintenance kits with machine purchases that might include filters, fluids and other items needed at various intervals.

One thing that may stretch out the servicing intervals is utilising bucket and blade attachments with double-sided cutting edges, so if one side reaches its wear limit, the operator can simply reverse the attachment to extend its life.

4.      Go for an easily serviceable fuel system

Perhaps one of the most important parts of the compact tracked loader is the fuel system, which is essentially what keeps it running in tip top condition. Any lack of maintenance usually means machine breakdown.

It is necessary to always use clean fuel, regularly drain any water from the fuel water separator and change the fuel filter element within the recommended intervals.

However, thanks to today’s advancements in technology, the fuel system is much easier to maintain. Some of these features include:

  • Transparent fuel water separator housings that allow operators to easily inspect for water in the fuel
  • Electronic sensors on the fuel water separator that alert operators to water in the fuel
  • Tubes connected to the bottom of the fuel water separator that allow operators to easily drain it when necessary
  • Automatic electric priming pumps that prime the fuel system with the turn of a key switch
  • Fuel systems in which the air is automatically bled while the machine is running, without having to open bleed screws or use tools

5.      Ensure your dealer provides excellent parts and service support

While some minor issues can be diagnosed and fixed by the operator themselves, more often that not some professional help is required. Find a dealer who is committed to answering to calls for help and in a timely manner. Once again, once your machine breaks down, your project slows down.

Also consider the parts availability at the dealership you bought your compact tracked loader from. When you’re in need of a specific part or component to get your machine up and running again, you do not want to be spending weeks on end waiting for it to arrive.

Once you have all these tips nailed down, you should have machines that will run for as long as you need it to.

Another important thing to keep in mind is, be diligent and service your machine when you should. No matter how advanced a machine is, a lazy operator will never get the most out of it.
