The Montana-based company who built the world’s biggest agricultural tractor, Big Equipment Co (formerly Big Bud Tractors) has started the year with some surprising news, announcing its plans to build and launch a brand new Big Bud tractor this year.
Some 30 years after the company stopped production of Big Bud tractors, it has decided to partner up with Rome Agricultural and Construction Equipment, based in Georgia, USA, to produce the 2023 640 Big Bud Tractor.
The model is set to make its debut at the upcoming CONEXPO-CON/AGG construction and heavy equipment trade show in Las Vegas, scheduled to run from March 14 to 18 this year.
According to a statement posted online, Big Equipment says the 2023 640 Big Bud will feature all-Caterpillar drive components, including engine, axles and transmission.
It will feature a 1.5-inch-thick frame with an approximate weight of 32 tonnes. While the original Big Bud is capable of producing a whopping 1100hp, the new Big Bud will offer a more modest horsepower range of between 640hp to 750hp, produced by a Cat C-18 engine. A Cat TA22 HD 18-speed power shift transmission transfers power to the ground.
The 2023 640 Big Bud will also feature Cat 988 HD axles, which Big Equipment claims is the largest of any Big Bud or any tractor ever built.
There will be various wheel and tyre options, including Titan LSW 1100/45R 46 tyres.
According to Big Equipment, one of the main objectives of this project is to provide farmers with a tractor with components that can be repaired by farmers, mechanics or dealerships without restrictions.
“Throughout the agricultural industry, there has been an increased demand for tractors with components and parts that are accessible to individuals, rather than limited availability/access through manufacturers and dealerships,” Big Equipment said.
“The industry standard at present is frustrating for many people as they don’t have the right to repair and are instead confined to a particular manufacturer or dealer for repairs, parts and maintenance.
“The new Big Bud will fill a void that currently exists in the industry and will be competitively priced.”
Earlier this year, John Deere signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the American Farm Bureau Federation, giving farmers the right to repair John Deere equipment instead of being restricted to nominated dealerships.
Local advocacy groups including National Farmers Federation has called for similar agreements to be put in place in Australia.
