Next-gen CLAAS AXION 900 unveiled

Proven high horsepower tractor range given several upgrades including more powerful engines and two operating system options

Originally released in 2011, the CLAAS AXION 900 tractor series has gained a steady following among producers with its perfect engine-and-transmission match as well as its fuel efficiency and ease of operation.

For 2017, CLAAS has given the series a refresh by equipping the four models in the series, with maximum power ranging from 325 to 445hp, several new features to further improve performance.

A powerful six-cylinder, 8.7-litre FPT Cursor 9 engine powers the range. The Tier 4 engine includes a new variable geometry turbo that delivers optimum charge-air pressure according to the load and engine speed.

CLAAS Harvest Centre Group Product Manager for CLAAS Tractors, Dave Knowles, says this new feature allows the tractors to deliver their full power from a standing start and at all forward speeds without the need for any extra boosting.

"In fact, 70 per cent of maximum torque is available even when idling," he says.

"The advanced low-speed concept means the engine develops 18 per cent more torque than previously at a lower speed. This reduces fuel consumption in all field and transport applications."

All models are equipped with an upgraded ZF Terramatic transmission to match the higher output.

"This continuously variable transmission features outstanding power transmission and efficiency in all speed ranges from 50m/h to 50km/h," Knowles says.

"Its new software further refines engine-transmission coordination and incorporates customer requirements under real-world conditions.

"For example, the cruise control can be deactivated using the accelerator pedal and the driver can switch between two saved engine droop values simply by pressing a button."

For the first time, operators can choose between two operating systems on the CLAAS AXION 900 tractors. All models can be specified with the new CLAAS Information System Plus (CIS+) or the CLAAS Electronic on-Board Information System (CEBIS).

The former features a 178mm (7-inch) CIS colour display mounted on the A-pillar and the multi-function armrest incorporating the ELECTROPILOT four-way control lever and DRIVESTICK control lever.

"The new CIS+ is an intermediate system that is aimed at customers who want greater convenience and efficiency but do not need all the functionality of the CEBIS system," Knowles says.

The updated CEBIS operating system features a new 300mm (12-inch) touch-screen display and an ergonomic armrest incorporating the CMOTION multi-function control lever.

"The new software and intuitive operation offers many new functions for rapid and straightforward operation," Knowles says.

"For example, frequently-used tractor functions can be accessed simply by tapping the machine silhouette on the CEBIS touch display."

Factory-fitted GPS steering and CLAAS TELEMATICS remote monitoring systems are available in all models and configurations.

All AXION 900 tractors have load-sensing hydraulics with an output of 150 or 220l/min and release levers for all hydraulic couplings at the rear.

"The function buttons on the armrest and multi-function control lever can be configured for any of the spool valves," Knowles adds.

In the CEBIS version, the driver can assign priority to any of the eight spool valves.

"The pre-set oil volume for the prioritised spool valve then remains almost constant even when other spool valves are in use," Knowles says.

"This prioritisation option is useful when operating equipment, such as hydraulic motors or pneumatic precision seed drills, that require a constant oil flow."

All AXION 900 models are fitted with a universal (ISO500) tow hitch support and a six-way adjustable drawbar.

Other options include up to 20 LED working and road lights, wide-angle mirrors with two separately adjustable fields of view, a compressed air connection mounted near the left-hand steps and a removable tool drawer with telescopic runners.

"Another useful detail for practical day-to-day use is the easily accessible, external battery terminals on all models," Knowles says.

"This means that the tractor can be used as a power source for other jobs, such as in-field refuelling."

CLAAS' new generation AXION 900 tractors will be available to order in New Zealand and Australia from early 2018.
