Slow start for tractor sales

Around 550 new tractors sold in January, TMA reported

The tractor market has gotten off to subdued start in 2025, with just over 550 units sold in the first month of the year, down 15 per cent against the same month last year, according to the Tractor and Machinery Association of Australia's (TMA) latest sales figures.

“Dealers have been reporting that order enquiry has been solid but with extreme weather conditions being felt in various parts of the country, it is perhaps no surprise that deliveries were down,” said TMA executive director, Gary Northover.

“Expectations of a flattening out of sales remain as we try and not place too much emphasis on one month’s numbers.”

The state-by-state picture is as follows:

  • Queensland: up three per cent year on year (YOY);
  • New South Wales: down 10 per cent YOY;
  • Victoria: down 35 per cent YOY;
  • Western Australia: down 25 per cent YOY;
  • South Australia: down 16 per cent YOY;
  • Tasmania: up 25 per cent YOY; and
  • NT: down 13 per cent YOY.

Meanwhile, sales across all reporting categories also suffered dips except for the under 40hp segment:

  • Under 40hp: up 11 per cent YOY;
  • 40 to 100hp: down two per cent YOY;
  • 100 to 200hp: down 33 per cent YOY;
  • Over 200hp:  down 42 per cent YOY

Additionally, the TMA reported it wasn’t just tractors that did it tough as sales of combine harvesters also lagged behind, falling 35 per cent behind last year.

“With less than 700 combines sold last year, the industry is certainly hoping for a better year in 2025,” Northover said.

Baler sales were also well down in the month and sits 57 per cent behind for the year, while sales of out-front mowers were also down 30 per cent compared to the same month last year.
