New OHS chart outlines regulations and safety best practices on livestock farms

Published by Pro-Visual Publishing with the support of the National Safety Council of Australia Foundation, the latest Livestock Industry Guide to Workplace Safety 2016/17 covers various topics including quad bike safety, tractor safety, animal handling and more.

"Livestock is one of the highest risk sectors within the agricultural industry – an industry currently contributing to high levels of injury and fatality to Australian workers," Pro-Visual says.

"Risks have been identified as, handling livestock, quad bikes, tractors, occupational diseases, and child safety on farms.

"The aim of this guide is to educate livestock farmers of the importance of health and safety within the agricultural industry."

In addition to ensuring the safety of the handler, the guide also offers tips on reducing risk of injury or stress among livestock.

Some of the guidelines offered in the wall-mounted chart include:

  • Ensure livestock loading ramps cater to flow and breed of cattle/sheep
  • Pens and yards should be free of any obstructions such as bolts, wire, protruding nails and trip hazards to avoid injury
  • When undertaking animal husbandry procedures, use crushes, head bails and cradles if restraining is required
  • Only operate tractors with Roll Over Protection Structures (ROPS) fitted
  • Wear appropriate clothing and protective equipment where necessary

The guide also covers agriculture and veterinary (Agvet) chemical handling advice, such as labeling all chemicals on farm appropriately in accordance with the Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling (GHS).

Chemicals need to be labelled with precautionary statements and advice on preventing or minimising adverse effects the chemicals may cause.

The Livestock Industry Guide to Workplace Safety 2016/17 is Augmented Reality (AR) capable, which means users can obtain more information on the topics covered in the guide by scanning over the AR icons on the chart using the free Pro-Vis AR App.

The guide is distributed free of charge to all livestock operations around the country.
