Tractor sales pick up in February

Solid uptick from last month but still behind previous year’s figures

The new tractor market enjoyed a better month of sales in February with just over 800 units sold, compared to a much more subdued 550 units in January 2025, the Tractor and Machinery Association of Australia (TMA) reported.

This brings the year-to-date (YTD) figure to 10 per cent below 2024 in terms of unit sold but in retail turnover terms, the figure is around 29 per cent down, which the TMA attributed to a drop in large tractor sales.

It’s a mixed bag in terms of sales performance across the states:

  • Victoria: up six per cent year-on-year (YOY) but down YTD by 15 per cent;
  • South Australia: up 8 per cent YOY and four per cent behind YTD;
  • Queensland: down six per cent down YOY and two per cent down YTD;
  • New South Wales: down 14 per cent YOY and down 13 per cent YTD, with dry conditions across the state appearing to be having an impact on demand;
  • Western Australia: down 10 per cent YOY and down 16 per cent YTD;
  • Tasmania: Up five per cent YOY; and
  • NT: down 16 per cent YOY

Across the reporting categories, the under-40hp segment continues to thrive while the others not so much:

  • Under 40hp: up 31 per cent YOY and up 21 per cent YTD;
  • 40 to 100hp: down 12 per cent YOY and seven per cent down YTD;
  • 100 to 200hp: up seven per cent YOY and down 12 per cent YTD; and
  • Over 200hp:  down 42 per cent YOY and down 42 per cent YTD.

On another note, sales of combine harvesters bounced back in February as manufacturers and dealers seek to stimulate the market after a subdued 2024, the TMA reported.

Baler sales were steady for the month but sit 39 per cent behind last year, while sales of out-front mowers sank again to be down 30 per cent compared to last year.
