VIDEO: Flexi-Coil 80ft air drill makes debut

Impressive 24m wide drill a head-turner at recent Henty Machinery Field Days

Following 12 months of development and trials, Flexi-Coil has officially launched its widest seed drill yet - the 80ft 5500 air drill, into the market.

Speaking at the recent Henty Machinery Field Days, Flexi-Coil Australia brand leader Steve Mulder says the drill sets itself apart from others in the market with its variable packing pressure system.

"We have the ability to transfer weight from front to back so we can actually vary the packing pressure depending on the soil type and packing required," he says.

The 5500 range was previously only available in widths of 60ft and 70ft. Mulder says the 80ft (24m) drill offers higher productivity with its larger width.

Its configuration consists of two front ranks, which follow the contours of the land at a depth set by the nearby castor assemblies; plus two rear ranks, which follow the ground on which the press wheels run. Flexi-Coil says this allows it to achieve exact and repeatable sowing depth.

"It has a flexible frame - a legacy for all Flexi-Coil products which means it follows the ground very well so you get even germination," Mulder says.

Another point of difference of the new drill, according to Flexi-Coil, is its transportability. It folds down to a width of just 5.3m wide and 4.0m high, making it ideal for moving on Australian roads.

"With this machine, the weight is evenly distributed across the wheels in transport, whereas a centrefold one has a lot more weight in the centre when it's folded up," Mulder says.

"So the 5500 makes it easier for growers to transport the drill between farms on public roads."

A single-point depth setting provides simple control of depth across the entire machine.

With the 80ft Flexi-Coi 5500 air seeder, customers can choose from different spacing options including 10-inch spacing or 12-inch spacing; as well as a choice between semi pneumatic or steel press wheels depending on soil condition.

Earlier this year, a farmer in Griffith (NSW) tested the 80ft 5500 drill and was so rapt about the outcome he bought the demo unit, Mulder says.

The 5500 80ft drill is priced from $300,000 and is available for purchase now from over 50 Flexi-Coil dealers nationwide.
